Morning: Minor Consent and Confidentiality for Sexual Health Services in California

Did you know that there are laws in California that allow minors to access certain sensitive health services without parental notification or consent? California law also requires schools to excuse students from school to attend these confidential medical appointments.

In this training, the California Department of Public Health STD Control Branch will provide an overview of the laws that impact minors and their access to confidential sexual health services in California and the different roles of clinical providers and educators.  Representatives from clinical service providers in Santa Cruz County will present information about the services they offer for young people.

Afternoon (Administrators): Developing policies & procedures to ensure students can access confidential services

Administrator teams will continue until 12:30 pm and will focus on sharing best practices for developing and implementing policies and procedures at your schools to ensure that students can access their rights to confidential medical services, including leaving campus during the school day if needed.  Administrators are encouraged to bring anyone who might interact with students around these issues (i.e., health clerks, school nurses, counselors, etc).

*Teachers and health educators will then continue for more in depth training until 3:00 pm including an update on current Contraceptive Methods and tips for teaching about them in the classroom and how to answer sensitive questions about clinical services and sexual health topics in general.
